Not as intriguing as his first 2 books. This is the first time I have been turned off by a printing type, but it created some difficultes.

What an ending to such a fast-paced book! I have to admit that I have been rooting for Jean-Claude the whole time, faults and all, over Richard, but dang... the ending shocked even me!

I've been reading Amy Tan's novels one by one and this one was one of the best i think. It's the story of the half-Chinese daughter of the American madam of a courtesan house in China who learns to let go of her resentments against her mother when she finally realizes later in life that her situation parallels her mother's in many ways and that our fates in life tend to depend a lot on the actions of others, especially when you are a woman and in China. A recently widowed woman, who is also haunted by the previous deaths of her parents and a child, meets a violin playing ghost and is caught up in the cathartic power of music. This novel is rather repetitive and emotionally messy, apparently drawn from the author's own emotions, who here as she has before, gets caught up apparently, in the cathartic power of writing.Anne Rice to me is always kind of a hit or miss in the long run but even the misses have their enjoyable qualities. That being said, this one was not one of her best.
